Exclusive Desk: A recent study has revealed that people who sleep less at night are at a higher risk of developing depression.
Those who sleep five hours or less a night are most at risk, the study, published Thursday, said.
This study was conducted on 7 thousand 146 people. All of them are residents of England and are over 50 years of age. Researchers say that depression symptoms appear within a few years due to a tendency to sleep less in the elderly. An average of eight years apart, they were diagnosed with depression.
Those who slept an average of five hours or less were 2.5 times more likely to develop depression than those who slept seven hours a night. Even those who sleep less due to genetics have a 14 percent higher risk of developing depression later in life.
Research shows that too much sleep is actually a big problem. Older adults who slept more than nine hours a night also had signs of depression late in life.
They are 1.5 times more likely to suffer from depression than the general population. Meanwhile, even if affected by depression, sleep is reduced. About 33 percent of people with depression sleep five hours or less.
The study is based on data from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging. The research is published in Translational Psychiatry.
Researchers have also discovered the genes that cause people to sleep less. However, there has been no research on the exact percentage of people in the world who have this gene.
There have been many reports in recent times about the health risks associated with lack of sleep. A study of nearly 8,000 British civil service workers last year found that less than five hours of sleep increased the risk of heart disease, depression, cancer and diabetes.
